Sun Parasol Mandevilla – The Premium Variety

All Mandevilla plants at Nursery 2 U are part of the licensed Suntory® Sun Parasol® range. Sun Parasol Mandevilla varieties outperform standard mandevilla, with more flowers per stem, better disease resistance, longer flowering seasons and stronger heat tolerance. As well as being prettier, they're tougher and more reliable in the Australian climate.

Our current Sun Parasol Mandevilla collection includes stunning varieties like Double Pink Blush, Apricot, Stars & Stripes, Mauvelous, Up Orange, Yellow, and Blue. Each variety has its own character. Some are compact and basket-friendly, others are vigorous climbers built for trellises. So there's a variety to suit just about any space and any grower.

How to Grow & Care for Mandevilla in Australia

Mandevilla plants thrive in Australia's warm climate and are surprisingly low-maintenance once established. Here's what they need:

  • Light: Full sun to part sun, at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering.
  • Watering: Regular watering during the growing season; allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between drinks. Reduce watering in winter.
  • Feeding: A slow-release fertiliser in spring and summer encourages prolific blooming. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas, which promote foliage over flowers.
  • Support: Climbing varieties need a trellis, stake, or wire to wind around as they grow.
  • Temperature: Mandevilla loves warmth and will go dormant or drop leaves in cold snaps. In cooler climates, bring pots undercover during winter.

Where to Plant Mandevilla

Mandevilla plants are some of the most versatile flowering plants you can buy for outdoor spaces. Climbing varieties like Up Orange and Apricot are made for trellises, arbours, and fence coverage. Give them something to climb, and they'll reward you with a cascade of blooms.

Compact and trailing varieties like Mauvelous, Double Pink Blush and Stars & Stripes suit hanging baskets, patio pots and balcony gardens where you want big colour in a tight space. However you plant them, a Sun Parasol Mandevilla transforms a plain outdoor area into something special.

FAQs About Mandevilla Plants

Are Mandevilla plants suitable for Australian gardens?

Yes, Mandevilla plants are well-suited to Australia's warm climate. They do well in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, and Sun Parasol varieties are bred for heat tolerance and longer flowering in warm conditions.

How tall does a mandevilla grow?

It depends on the variety. Climbing Sun Parasol types can reach 2–3 metres or more when given a trellis, while compact bush and basket varieties stay much smaller, typically under 60cm.

What's the difference between Sun Parasol Mandevilla and regular Mandevilla?

Sun Parasol Mandevilla is a licensed Suntory® series bred for higher flower count, better disease resistance and stronger heat tolerance. They bloom more prolifically and perform more reliably than standard mandevilla varieties.

When do Mandevilla plants flower?

Mandevilla plants flower from spring through to autumn, with peak blooming in the warmer months. In tropical and subtropical regions, they may flower almost year-round.

Do mandevillas need full sun?

They perform best in full sun or part sun; at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Reduced light typically means fewer flowers.

How often should I water my mandevilla?

During the growing season, water regularly and allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot, so make sure the pot drains well.

Are Mandevilla plants toxic to pets?

Yes, Mandevilla plants are considered mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep them out of reach of pets and seek veterinary advice if your animal has chewed on the plant.

How do I get my Mandevilla to flower more?

Give it plenty of sun, feed it a low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertiliser and deadhead spent blooms regularly. Pruning lightly after flowering also encourages a fresh flush of buds.
