Bougainvillea care sheet
Bougainvillea often drop their flowers during transit that is normal as they don’t like the dark. You can re-acclimatize to full sun over a week after arrival.
If your plants arrive bare rooted
Can be planted in the ground straight away on arrival or plant into a 140mm-200mm pot (no bigger in the first year)
If your plant arrives potted in a tube
You can keep it in the tube for up to 6 weeks (will need daily watering)
You can place this plant in holes already dug for it and still in its tube until you are ready to pot.
This plant may need to stand in a bigger pot so it remains upright because the tubes are not sturdy, we use frames in the nursery.
To remove from tube: place second and third finger between the stem and turn upside down, tap corner of pot onto a hard surface to settle the soil, and slide pot upwards, do not trim or detangle the roots.
General info
Water in well, and water every day in summer until established (2-3 months)
If you receive this plant during extreme temperatures (below 5 or above 35 degrees) keep at room temps in a well-lit area until the temps normalize, once the plant is established, it is ok with warmer and colder temps.
If you receive this plant in winter in southern parts of Australia, you can use a plastic dome type greenhouse (any size) that is placed in the sun, to shelter them from the elements while still getting enough light.
Prone to aphids and chewing insects, use Pyrethrum when you see the insects (not as a preventative)
Other times you can use a preventative called Maverik (Fluvalinate) which we also sell as “Caladium/Colocasia Care” in our Growers Prescription range of small-scale chemicals.
Feed regularly according to your chosen food’s instructions.
Bougainvillea need to be in full sun or very close to full sun to thrive and flower.
