Monkey Tail Cactus
As the monkey tail cactus matures, its stems naturally cascade over the edges of hanging pots and shelves, creating a sculptural, textured look that works beautifully indoors or outdoors. It also produces bright red flowers throughout the warmer months, often blooming more generously than many other cactus varieties, which makes it incredibly rewarding to grow.
Native to mountainous regions of Bolivia, the monkey tail cactus plant is epiphytic, meaning it grows from rocky crevices rather than deep soil. Because of that, it prefers a well-draining potting mix, bright light and only occasional watering. The stems store moisture, so it’s very tolerant of missed waterings or warm conditions.
Finding the Monkey Tail Cactus in Australia
Looking for a monkey tail cactus for sale? The good news is that this plant is very well suited to the Australian climate. It adapts easily to warm weather, bright light and patio conditions, but it can also live happily indoors near a sunny window.
Outdoors, it can tolerate full sun, but many growers find part sun or bright filtered light helps prevent heat stress in summer.
Because it’s naturally fast growing, it’s an excellent choice if you want a plant that becomes impressive with time rather than staying small and slow-growing for years. Indoors, regular rotation ensures all stems receive light evenly.
Monkey Tail Cactus for Sale
When browsing monkey tail cactus plants, you’ll usually see “tip cuts” or “mid cuts.”
Tip cuts give the classic tapered look you see in photos, while mid cuts tend to produce strong branching as they grow. Both root well in the right environment. If you’re purchasing online, choosing from our makes all the difference in plant health and successful establishment.
When buying a monkey tail cactus online, a specialised online nursery in Australia is your best bet.
Monkey Tail Cactus: Plant Care
A monkey tail cactus enjoys fast-draining soil, bright light and deep but infrequent watering.
Water more regularly during summer, then reduce watering significantly in winter while the plant naturally slows down. Hanging pots sized around 180-200mm are ideal, and good airflow around the stems helps prevent moisture issues.
If you enjoy collecting statement plants, this cactus pairs beautifully with indoor favourites like philodendrons as well as colourful foliage plants such as caladiums.
